Bridge Building Spotlight
Pile Bucks
It’s no secret that our heavy civil construction industry is short on skilled labor. Hamilton Construction Co. (Hamilton) has been building bridges, highways, dams, and critical infrastructure as a heavy civil contractor in Oregon since 1939. As we partner with public and private owners to complete complex projects, we continue to look for the next generation of bridge builders. One of the most important bridge-building positions is the Pile Buck, which gets our jobs out of the ground and over the water.
A Pile Buck’s work is critical because their primary role is to build the foundation of bridges. These skilled craftspeople drive pile, build cofferdams, assemble falsework, and set bridge beams. They work with crane operators, welding machines, diesel and vibratory pile hammers, and an entire assortment of hand tools to get their work done.
To reach the Pile Buck designation at Hamilton, employees must demonstrate an aptitude for Flux Cored Arc and Shielded Metal Arc-certified welding, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, pile driving, rigging, signaling, and working with operators. Once you become a journey-level Pile Buck, you will earn upwards of $50 an hour and a generous benefit package, with ample opportunity for overtime. Not only will you work in beautiful locations throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, but you will also have options for career growth and longevity.
There are two ways to start your career as a Pile Buck: (1) Enter a Carpentry Apprenticeship program and get on-the-job training while you earn a salary, or (2) If you are a skilled worker, send us a job application today.
